AI labels and image captions in the Web Builder

In the Web Builder, image captions and AI labels can be configured directly from the module settings. Both elements are permanently visible in the rendered content and meet the visibility requirements of Article 50(4) of the EU AI Act.

This article shows you in which modules the new settings are available, how to configure them, and what to be aware of from a legal perspective. Both elements are permanently visible in the rendered content and meet the visibility requirements of Article 50(4) of the EU AI Act.

Since 2 August 2026, Article 50(4) of the EU AI Act applies. It requires that AI-generated or AI-modified images are visibly and immediately recognisable as such when published. Alt text, metadata, footer notices, and labels that only appear on hover are explicitly not sufficient under the law.

The official EU icon set is optional – the disclosure itself is not.

Important: Sweap does not generate or classify the images. Whether an image requires an AI label – and which one – is a decision you make as the publisher. Sweap only provides the technical means to display the disclosure in a compliant way. This article is not a substitute for legal advice – in case of doubt, please consult your own data protection or legal team.

2. When is a label required?

An AI label must be set when:

  • the image is generated entirely by AI, or
  • a real image has been modified by AI in a way that could make it pass as authentic (e.g. face swap, AI-furnished room, added or removed objects).

Standard image editing (cropping, colour and exposure correction, retouching) does not require a label. Reduced obligations apply to purely artistic works.

3. Available modules

Image captions and AI labels are currently available in the following Web Builder modules:

  • Image (Single Image)
  • Image + Text
  • Highlight
  • Gallery modules (Simple Gallery, Gallery Masonry, Image Slideshow)
Please note: In Builder 2.0, image captions can still be added manually as a text element. The integrated AI label is only available in the Web Builder.

4. Configure an image caption

The image caption is permanently displayed below the image. It is visible without any interaction (hover, click) being required.

  1. Open the registration page in the Web Builder.
  2. Select the Image, Image + Text, or Highlight module.
  3. Enter the desired text in the Image caption area. As long as the field remains empty, no caption is rendered.
  4. Choose the alignment of the caption: left, centre, or right.
  5. Choose the text colour. The caption colour is independent of the module's general text colour and can be set separately.
Note: Long captions wrap automatically and remain within the image width. Image size, crop, and corner radius are not affected.

5. Configure an AI label

The AI label is displayed as an icon overlaid directly on the image. The official EU icon set is used as the basis.

  1. Open the AI label area in the same module.
  2. Select the label type:
    • No label – no AI icon is shown (default).
    • AI-generated – for images generated entirely by AI.
    • AI-modified – for real photographs that have been modified by AI in a way that makes them appear authentic.
  3. Choose the position of the label on the image. Six positions are available: top and bottom, each left, centre, or right.
  4. Choose the styling:
    • Black (solid) or Black (transparent) – for images with light content at the label position.
    • White (solid) or White (transparent) – for images with dark content at the label position.

The label stays inside the image with consistent spacing from the edges. Image size, crop, and corner radius remain unchanged.

Warning: Choose position and styling so that the label remains visible and legible at a glance. A white label on a white background does not meet the legal visibility requirement.

6. Preview and publish

  1. Open the preview and check the display of the image caption and AI label on both desktop and mobile.
  2. If a module-specific mobile image is configured, the label is positioned correctly there as well. Verifying the mobile layout is still recommended.
  3. Publish the registration page and open the public URL to verify the configuration on the live page.

7. Important notes for use

  • Publisher responsibility. Choosing the correct label and deciding whether disclosure is required is the responsibility of the person publishing the registration page.
  • Visibility without interaction. Image caption and AI label are always visible. This fulfils the EU AI Act requirement that the disclosure must be visible without hover or click.
  • Existing images without disclosure. Images for which neither a caption nor an AI label is configured remain visually unchanged. No additional elements are added to the page.
  • Accessibility. The alt text of an image remains in place regardless of the AI label and is not overwritten.
